Project Description
October is a special month in the 9th grade wing. This is when we begin our first large-scale interdisciplinary project with the entire team. Over the past five years, I have done different variations of performance projects. This year the students explored the various forms of poetry and spoken word culture. They wrote haikus, elegies, carpe diem poems and experimented with free verse for a number of different themes.
The students worked in groups of six to create an original group piece poem focused on celebrating life in the mirror of death. Each group wrote, choreographed and rehearsed their work along with their handmade instruments for the entire month. The results were powerful spoken word poems performed with heart and intensity. Please check out the YouTube video of the October 30th performance to the left.
